Fridge, washer and dryer sizes, and the openings they need
Updated 10 October 2026
A full-size fridge is 30–36 in (76–91 cm) wide and 66–70 in (168–178 cm) tall; a washer or dryer is 27 in (69 cm) wide in the US and 60 cm (23.5 in) in Europe. Every one of them needs air: 1 in (2.5 cm) at each side and the top, 2 in (5 cm) behind a fridge, 4–6 in (10–15 cm) behind a washer for the hoses and a dryer for the vent. Measure the opening, then take those off before you compare.
Fridges
| Fridge | Width | Depth (with handles) | Height |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top-freezer | 28–33 in · 71–84 cm | 29–34 in · 74–86 cm | 61–68 in · 155–173 cm |
| Bottom-freezer | 30–33 in · 76–84 cm | 31–35 in · 79–89 cm | 67–70 in · 170–178 cm |
| Side-by-side | 33–36 in · 84–91 cm | 29–35 in · 74–89 cm | 67–70 in · 170–178 cm |
| French door | 33–36 in · 84–91 cm | 29–36 in · 74–91 cm | 68–70 in · 173–178 cm |
| Counter-depth (any style) | 30–36 in · 76–91 cm | 24–30 in · 61–76 cm | 68–72 in · 173–183 cm |
| European freestanding | 55–60 cm · 22–24 in | 60–65 cm · 24–26 in | 170–200 cm · 67–79 in |
| Compact / under-counter | 18–24 in · 45–60 cm | 20–24 in · 50–60 cm | 32–34 in · 81–86 cm |
The opening: the fridge's width plus 1–2 in (2.5–5 cm), its height plus 1 in (2.5 cm), and 2 in (5 cm) free behind it. The doors need to open past 90° to pull the drawers out, so a fridge against a side wall wants 2–4 in (5–10 cm) on the hinge side; French doors want nothing beside them on either side. A counter-depth fridge sits flush with 25 in (64 cm) counters — a standard one stands 5–10 in (13–25 cm) proud of them, which is what people forget.
Washers and dryers
| Machine | Width | Depth | Height |
|---|---|---|---|
| Washer or dryer, US | 27 in · 69 cm | 27–34 in · 69–86 cm (door closed) | 38–43 in · 97–109 cm |
| Washer or dryer, Europe | 60 cm · 23.5 in | 55–65 cm · 22–26 in | 85 cm · 33.5 in |
| Compact / apartment, US | 24 in · 61 cm | 24–26 in · 61–66 cm | 33–34 in · 84–86 cm |
| Stacked pair, US | 27 in · 69 cm | 30–34 in · 76–86 cm | 75–80 in · 190–203 cm |
| Side by side pair, US | 54–56 in · 137–142 cm | — | — |
Allow 1 in (2.5 cm) each side so they do not knock, 4–6 in (10–15 cm) behind for the hoses, the drain and a dryer's vent, and 36 in (90 cm) in front for the door swing and a laundry basket. A front-loader's door opens 24 in (60 cm); a top-loader needs 20 in (50 cm) above its lid, which rules out a shelf there. A stacked pair needs a ceiling of 84 in (213 cm) to load the top one.

A dishwasher door open needs 24 in (60 cm) in front of it, and that is the space an island across from it must still leave 48 in (122 cm) for — see the kitchen island guide.
Put it where it will go. Open Won't Fit with a kitchen already drawn, set the walls to your measurements, and drop the fridge in at the size you are buying. It shows whether the doors clear the counter and whether the island still has its aisle. Free for two rooms, no account.
