Bed sizes, and the space around them
Updated 10 October 2026
A queen mattress is 60 × 80 in (152 × 203 cm); the frame adds 2–5 in (5–13 cm) on each side and 4–10 in (10–25 cm) at the head and foot. Leave 30 in (76 cm) on every side you walk along — 24 in (60 cm) is the squeeze — and 36 in (91 cm) at the foot if a door or a wardrobe opens there. A queen with two nightstands needs a room of at least 10 × 10 ft (3 × 3 m).
Mattress sizes
Mattresses are standard; frames are not. Add the frame's extra to every figure below — a plain platform adds an inch or two, a sleigh bed can add a foot.

The space around a bed
| Beside the bed | Leave | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A side you walk along | 30 in · 76 cm (24 in · 60 cm at a squeeze) | Getting in and out, making the bed |
| A side against the wall | 0 | Fine for one sleeper; the other climbs over |
| The foot, with a door or wardrobe opening there | 36 in · 91 cm | The door's swing plus somebody standing in it |
| The foot, nothing opening there | 24–30 in · 60–76 cm | Walking past |
| In front of a hinged wardrobe | 36 in · 91 cm | The doors swing about 24 in (60 cm); you stand in the rest |
| In front of a chest of drawers | 36 in · 91 cm | A drawer open, and you bending over it |
| A nightstand | 18–24 in · 45–60 cm wide | Add it to the width you need |
The smallest room for each bed
With a nightstand on each side, 30 in (76 cm) to walk along both sides, and 36 in (91 cm) at the foot. A room this size has no space left for a wardrobe, so add its depth plus 36 in (91 cm) to the length if one has to go in.
| Bed | Minimum room |
|---|---|
| Full | 9 × 10 ft · 2.8 × 3.0 m |
| Queen | 10 × 10 ft · 3.0 × 3.0 m |
| King | 12 × 10 ft · 3.6 × 3.0 m |
| California king | 11 × 11 ft · 3.4 × 3.4 m |
Pushing one side of the bed to the wall and dropping that nightstand takes about 4 ft (1.2 m) off the width — which is how a queen goes into an 8 ft (2.4 m) wide room.
