Rug sizes, and where the legs go
Updated 10 October 2026
Under a sofa, an 8 × 10 ft (240 × 300 cm) rug with the sofa's front legs on it; under a queen bed, 8 × 10 ft placed so 2 ft (60 cm) shows on three sides; under a king, 9 × 12 ft (270 × 360 cm); under a dining table, the table plus 24 in (60 cm) on every side so the chairs stay on it when pushed back. The rule everywhere: either all the legs on the rug or the front legs on it — never a rug that floats in the middle touching nothing.
Standard rug sizes
| Size | In centimetres | Typically under |
|---|---|---|
| 3 × 5 ft | 90 × 150 cm | A doorway, a reading chair |
| 5 × 8 ft | 150 × 240 cm | A loveseat, a small bedroom beside the bed |
| 6 × 9 ft | 180 × 270 cm | A full bed, a small living room |
| 8 × 10 ft | 240 × 300 cm | A sofa with two chairs, a queen bed, a table for 6 |
| 9 × 12 ft | 270 × 360 cm | A sectional, a king bed, a table for 8 |
| 10 × 14 ft | 300 × 420 cm | A large living room with every leg on the rug |
| Runner, 2.5 × 8 ft | 75 × 240 cm | A hallway, beside a bed, along a kitchen counter |
| Round, 6 or 8 ft | 180 or 240 cm | A round table for 4 or 6 |
Living room
| Seating | Rug | Legs |
|---|---|---|
| Sofa only, small room | 5 × 8 ft · 150 × 240 cm | Front legs on; the rug runs 6 in · 15 cm past each sofa arm |
| Sofa and two chairs | 8 × 10 ft · 240 × 300 cm | Front legs of everything on the rug |
| Sectional | 9 × 12 ft · 270 × 360 cm | Front legs on, or all legs if the room is large |
| Everything on the rug, large room | 10 × 14 ft · 300 × 420 cm | All legs on, 12–18 in · 30–45 cm of floor showing round the edge |
The rug should be at least as wide as the sofa, and ideally 6–12 in (15–30 cm) wider on each side. Leave 12–18 in (30–45 cm) of bare floor between the rug and the walls; in a small room 8 in (20 cm) will do.
Bedroom
| Bed | Rug | Placement |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | 5 × 8 ft · 150 × 240 cm | Under the lower two-thirds of the bed, 2 ft · 60 cm showing at the side and the foot |
| Full | 6 × 9 ft · 180 × 270 cm | Under the lower two-thirds, 18–24 in · 45–60 cm showing on three sides |
| Queen | 8 × 10 ft · 240 × 300 cm | Under the lower two-thirds, 2 ft · 60 cm showing on three sides; nightstands off the rug |
| King | 9 × 12 ft · 270 × 360 cm | Under the lower two-thirds, 2–3 ft · 60–90 cm showing on three sides |
| Any bed, small room | Two runners, 2.5 × 8 ft · 75 × 240 cm | One each side, where feet land |
The rug starts just in front of the nightstands and runs past the foot of the bed: your feet land on it on both sides and at the end, and the nightstands stand level on the floor.
Dining room
The table's footprint plus 24 in (60 cm) on every side, so a chair pushed back to sit down keeps all four legs on the rug — a chair with two legs off catches every time. Choose the rug's shape to match the table's.
| Table | Rug |
|---|---|
| 4 seats, 48 × 30 in · 122 × 76 cm | 8 × 10 ft · 240 × 300 cm (or 6 × 9 ft · 180 × 270 cm at a squeeze) |
| 6 seats, 72 × 36 in · 183 × 91 cm | 8 × 10 ft · 240 × 300 cm |
| 8 seats, 96 × 40 in · 244 × 102 cm | 9 × 12 ft · 270 × 360 cm |
| Round, 48 in · 122 cm | Round 8 ft · 240 cm |
